Part of the Alentejo’s montado ecosystem (cork oak forests), in Portugal, Herdade do Esporão has extraordinary conditions for agriculture. With approximately 700 hectares of vineyards, olive groves and the other crops we grow using organic methods and integrated production. Here we have around 40 grape varieties, 4 types of olive, orchards and kitchen gardens.
Quinta do Ameal, in the demarcated region of Vinho Verde, is a historic property registered since 1710. It is a unique place not only for its beauty, but for its setting in the Lima sub-region, the cradle of the Loureiro variety.
Over the years, Quinta do Ameal has always remained true to its origin and has stood out for its sustainable agricultural practices and for bringing new perspectives to the Vinho Verde region. It thus became a pioneer in affirming the capacity of the Loureiro grape variety, to produce white wines of quality and high capacity for evolution. The Quinta do Ameal has about 30 ha, of which 14 are Loureiro vineyards. The property extends over 800 meters from the bank of the river Lima and consists of 8 hectares of forest with a wide variety of trees, walnut, chestnut and stone pines, some of which are more than 200 years old.
The combination of the characteristics of Quinta do Ameal – its location, the granite soils, the characteristic climate of the region together with agricultural practices that respect nature – result in unique wines, with character and capacity for evolution that reflect the different expressions of the Loureiro variety.
Located in Douro DOC region, Quinta dos Murças benefits of a terroir heavily influenced by the mountains, altitude, schist soils and a climate that is typical of the river Douro valley. In the vineyards, dozens of native grapes where planted, following organic production method. Olive, orange and almond groves, as well as the Mediterranean forest help maintain a balanced ecosystem that enhances quality.
Products created in unique places or from singular grape varieties, that are perfect reflections of terroir, the result of natural factors, such as geology, topography and climate, grapes ideally suited to the land and what we do with them.
Reflecting the characteristics of vineyards and carefully selected grape varieties, these wines are vinified in old clay amphorae (talhas as we call them in the Alentejo), using ancient local techniques brought to the Alentejo by the Romans. Using an artisanal process, and spurning the use of yeasts, we aim to produce natural wines that are straightforward, authentic and vibrant.
Learn more about our Olive Oil Mill
The production of Esporão’s olive oils comes from the will to apply the knowledge obtained in the production of wines into the production of high quality olive oils. Thus, we seek that our olive oils are the expression of their land, looking forward to enhance indigenous varieties.
All oils, exclusively extra virgin or virgin, are produced using natural methods and entirely traditional processes, preserving the pure juice of the harvested olives.
Portugal is characterized by a variety of traditions and wine and olive oil’s production methods, yielding diverse products based on this ‘portuguese art’ of blending.
Hence, these products are a translation of the regions that originated them and of our historical and cultural patrimony.
Our technical teams’ studies, trials and tests may be found here too, since we seek constantly new paths, taking risks in order to find the wines and olive oils of the future.
