2012, Essência do Vinho – 16,5 points

Agriculture

Integrated Production (certificate)

An extremely dry year, with rainfall concentrated between December and February. The period from March to August was hotter than average, resulting in an early vintage. With these higher temperatures during the growing season, most grapes were picked in very ripe conditions resulting in rich wines with body and depth.

Grape Varieties

Syrah

Vinification / Maturation

Temperature controlled fermentation (28ºC) in small stainless steel tanks.

12 months ageing in american oak barrels, 12 months bottle ageing before market release. Great ageing potential.

More Information

This wine began at Vinha do Telheiro, where, 12 years ago, Syrah was planted in pale, loamy, rocky and shallow soils.

This wine is only produced in exceptional years and the result of intense experimentation and collaboration between Herdade do Esporão’s winemaking and viticulture teams. This involves the vinification of small blends of the same grape variety from different plots, in which the final goal is to understand and enhance the character of each grape associated with the type of soil and microclimate where it is grown.
