Gallery: The white cloak that covers Alentejo in Portugal

Whitewashed walls are one of the symbols of Alentejo.

Whitewashing was women’s work, and teaching it was passed down from mother to daughter. Felismina insisted on keeping this tradition in the family, teaching her daughter the technique and whitewashing the walls inside her home in the village of Casas Novas de Mares. This white cloak that covers the region not only makes the houses prettier, but keeps them cool and is less toxic than the paint that, some years ago, was not for every pocket.
