Harvest Tempo

At the moment, the grape harvest dictates what happens at Herdade do Esporão and Quinta dos Murças. Throughout the year, we have been working towards this moment, when we finally see the result of all our dedication. This is a time of great effort and work but also one of togetherness and celebration. Here, you can follow us through the vineyards, into the wineries and many other places our grapes visit, until they become wine. You can also discover the faces and many hands involved in the grape harvest. Without them, none of this would be possible.

20 September 2016 - Herdade do Esporão

Global grape treading

This morning, Adega dos Lagares has a rather global feel to it. The sun has just come up and our interns are stretching their legs; backwards and forwards in the tank. Our grape treaders are, Megan, from the United States, Don and Lee, from China, Peter, from Slovakia and Matt, from England. All from very different countries and cultures, here they are, together, enjoying the same experience. An inspiration for our wines.

20 September 2016 - Herdade do Esporão

II and V are already fermenting

This morning, at the Adega dos Lagares winery, we started to fill our amphorae. II and V were filled with grapes from Portalegre Old Vines. Now, all we have to do is leave them while they ferment naturally.

Trainees from “another world”

Don and Lee are 22 and come from Shenyang, China. They’re both studying pharmacy but want to be winemakers. This year, they decided to give a hand during the grape harvest and see how it is done at close quarters.

The art of grape picking

Here at Herdade do Esporão, the grapes are picked by hand or with the help of secateurs. Once picked, they are put in boxes and transported to the winery. Working in pairs, one on each side of the plot, these women do everything with great care, so as to avoid damaging the fruit. These are very experienced hands.

Grape treading

This afternoon, grapes are being trodden at the Adega dos Lagares winery. Using this traditional method, and as the name implies, the grapes are trodden in marble tanks to release the juice and pulp. Shoulder to shoulder, our trainees join together in a line and move slowly across the tank, treading the fruit methodically. Sometimes, they even sing, like in the old days.

This afternoon, we were with our agricultural manager, Rui Flores, that talked to us about the grape harvest. What it means, how it is lived, and the work that is done during this time of the year in the agricultural department.

We are ready for another week of work. Early in the morning, in Plot 26b, we harvest the best Syrah grapes.
