Verdelho and 2 Castas: new Esporão vintages available

Esporão has just launched the 2016 vintages of the Verdelho and Duas Castas white wines, which are made using grape varieties with unique characteristics. The wines also reflect the region’s geology, topology and climate combined with the art of winemakers David Baverstock and Sandra Alves.

The 2016 Verdelho is aromatic, balanced and unique, expressing the grape’s character, which is enhanced by the Alentejo region’s soils and climate. With an intense aroma of passion fruit, tangerine and lime, the grape variety continues to demonstrate its consistency and quality, year after year.

Esporão was pioneering when it planted Verdelho on mainland Portugal, quickly demonstrating that the variety was perfectly suited to the Alentejo’s soils and weather conditions. Over 20 years ago, the company built a winery exclusively for white wines that allied innovation and the winemaking team’s talent. Vision and nature were crucial to the success of Esporão’s Verdelho, which was considered the Best Wine in Portugal (at the 2015 Concurso de Vinhos de Portugal – Portuguese Wine Competition).

Every year, after the harvest, Esporão’s winemakers face the challenge of finding the best blend of two white grapes for 2 Castas. In 2016, David Baverstock and Sandra Alves chose Roupeiro and Viosinho to create a blend that boasts complex, delicate, citrus notes and slight floral nuances with an intense palate that boasts a slight mineral touch highlighted in a long, fresh finish.
