Esporão launches Quinta dos Murças
Esporão launches its first Douro wines

Today, Esporão introduces the wines, Quinta dos Murças Reserva 2008, Assobio 2009 and Tawny 10 Anos to the market, signalling the beginning of a project that aims to make its contribution to fulfilling the enormous potential of this winegrowing region. All of the wines come from Quinta dos Murças, an important 156-hectare estate with 60 hectares of vineyard acquired by the company in 2008, located near the village of Covelinhas, in the heart of the wine producing region.

For João Roquette, CEO of the Esporão Group, “despite being the oldest demarcated region in the world, the Douro still has enormous potential for growth and room for innovation”. Talking about the different approach that Esporão’s involvement in the region signals, João Roquette points out that “all of the phases of this project were devised and implemented so that our involvement in this magnificent region contributes something really new and important. I believe that the first wines that we’re currently launching are a reflection of that belief”.

An innovative vision of the Douro
Innovative practices were devised and implemented in virtually all the areas of the project: the vines were planted and handled in such a way as not to need herbicides; the landscaping project underway helps control any pests; the water from the mines is used to control the temperature of stock areas at the winery; the oenological profile of the wines allows the use of different barrels, including Portuguese oak, FSC-certified corks and, finally, the marketing and launch strategy for the wines culminated in the making of two documentaries about the region, the wine and Quinta dos Murças.

The documentary Alto Relevo can be viewed from 23rd February, on the site www.assobio.com.
