Alcohol and Health
 

Esporão is a member of the Beba Com Cabeça (Drink Sensibly) project, which aims to give information on the main issues related to alcohol in a simple and transparent way.

The Beba Com Cabeça campaign seeks to clarify any doubts about the effects of alcohol, what the right attitude is towards these issues and call attention to the consequences of certain behaviour.

Esporão has also signed up to the 100% COOL DRIVER campaign, in partnership with ANEBE.
100% COOL was the expression chosen for those people that each night decide to make sure the others in the group get home safely. 100% COOL is the designated driver with 0% alcohol.

When consumed in moderation, wine has various health benefits. There are already several studies that confirm that the consumption of red wine helps to prevent some diseases, particularly cardio-vascular ones.

Several specialists have identified the existence of different compounds in grapes which are beneficial. There is a higher concentration of these compounds in red grapes and they are listed below:

FLAVONOIDS
Flavonoids are a group of polyphenols and play an important role in various parts of the body. They have an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-allergenic effect, and help to prevent arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and some forms of cancer.
 
PROCYANIDINS
These compounds increase the resistance of collagen fibres. Collagen is a matrix linking the body’s tissues, in other words a sort of “cellular cement”. Increasing its resistance has a protective effect on the body’s blood vessels. 

RESVERATROL
Just like the Flavonoids, Resveratrol is a polyphenol. It has been proved that it helps to lower the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood (LDL), while raising the levels of good cholesterol (HDL). In addition, it helps to dissipate blood platelets and dilates blood vessels. 

We cannot forget that wine is an alcoholic drink, which should therefore be drunk in moderation. Nevertheless, it has numerous health benefits:

- It increases HDL (or good cholesterol);
- It reduces LDL (or bad cholesterol);
- It reduces the risk of heart attack;
- It helps regulate blood pressure as a result of its high potassium content and low levels of sodium;
- It reduces the likelihood of the formation of kidney stones;
- It aids digestion;
- It is rich in mineral salts;
- Its antioxidant properties help fight the ageing process.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) adds that, in order to enjoy wine in a healthy and pleasurable way, the recommended daily amount is two 15 cl glasses. More and more medical research is proving that wine can play an important and positive role in human health. Besides, for those who appreciate it, a glass of wine is guaranteed to lift your spirits.
